Prof. Maria Girardi received the 2010-11 Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award.

Reginald (Reggie) Bain is one of two USC students named as 2011 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars. Reggie is pursuing a double major in Physics and Mathematics. The 275 Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,095 mathematics, science, and engineering students, nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Senior Math Major Madison Claire Miller has been awarded a 2011 Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship in Mathematics. As a result, she will receive professional and financial support for up to five years, beginning with her teacher preparation program and continuing to her eligibility for tenure. The fellowship supports winners professionally and financially for up to $150,000. Miller, who won the 2010 College of Arts and Sciences outstanding rising senior award in mathematics, completed a comparative study of Costa Rican education systems during her study abroad. She is the tenth USC student and the eighth mathematics major to be named a Knowles Teaching Fellow since the program's inauguration in 2005.

Senior Jim Manning, a double major in Math and Statistics, is USC's sole finalist in the competition to be a Rhodes Scholar! A Carolina Scholar, Manning has a distinguished research record, including participating in two NSF summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Mathematics.
